Community Work
We are very community minded here at My Mother’s Bloomers. Our charity and community work is rather extensive (for a small shop) and we are proud of the work we do for others. Check out the calendar of events and links for dates and times of the events we work for.
Holiday Community Work
For years, the staff at My Mother’s Bloomers has gotten together as a team at Christmas to provide a Holiday Meal and gifts for a less fortunate family. This has always been a fun and heart warming thing for us to do, and to be anonymous makes it all the more special.
Supporting the SPCA
We do work for the SPCA annual dinner, providing the floral centerpieces, as well as having Neville as the auctioneer/emcee for the evening. This dinner and auction has become an annual favorite!
Supporting the Learning Disabilities Association of Nova Scotia at the "Blind Date with a Star"Event
Neville is also one of the “stars” at the annual ,” Blind Date with a Star!”, held in January, in support of the Learning Disabilities Association of Nova Scotia. We also provide floral pieces for this fun and tasty evening!
An Evening with Neville and Friends in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation
In November we hold our own event in support of the CBCF, called, “An Evening with Neville and Friends”. This started out as “A Night with Neville”, (until he got some friends!) and last year we raised several thousand dollars during our evening of music, floral design demos, tasty treats and other entertainment. This year will prove to be even bigger and (if possible) better!
Make Someone Smile Week in support of our senior citizens
Another one of our favorite summer events is the annual “Make Someone Smile Week”. This event started in Los Angeles, and is sponsored by Teleflora Canada. Locally, a group of florists here in Halifax (last year it was the folks at Janet’s Flowers and the gang here) got together and created 500 flower arrangements, using donated containers, foam and flowers, all in one day. We then delivered them all the next day to senior homes around the city. This was, although exhausting, was one of the most rewarding events we have done. We even got the Mayor of Halifax and Cyril from CTV’s Breakfast Television to help deliver the pieces to many happy people; some that rarely get visitors, let alone flowers. Other charities that we do both floral designs for, as well as entertainment, include the Children’s Wish Foundation, AIDS Nova Scotia, Neptune Theatre, The Festival of Trees (Nova Scotia Mental Health), the Terry Fox Run, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the IWK Children’s Hospital. Neville does floral demonstrations for many other local non profit and charitable groups around Atlantic Canada, including the Nova Scotia Orchid Society, the YACRO Foundation, and the Kid’s Help Phone.
Other than the above mentioned, we often give the gift of flowers or a gift certificate to smaller groups, fundraisers and charities throughout the year. Both owners give separately to many charities, too, and believe that we should do what we can to help others. whenever we can.
